How to Configure DNS on ESXi Server

Configuring Domain Name System (DNS) on your ESXi server is essential for proper network connectivity and domain name resolution. By setting up DNS on your ESXi server, you ensure that your virtual machines can communicate with other devices on the network using domain names instead of IP addresses. In this guide, we will walk you through the steps to configure DNS on your ESXi server.

Step 1: Access ESXi Host

To configure DNS on your ESXi server, you first need to access the ESXi host either through the vSphere client or the web interface. Once you have logged in, you can proceed with the following steps.

Step 2: Navigate to Networking

Next, navigate to the Networking tab in the vSphere client or web interface. Here, you will see a list of all the available network adapters on your ESXi server.

Step 3: Edit DNS Settings

Locate the network adapter that you want to configure DNS for and click on the “Edit” button. In the DNS configuration section, enter the preferred and alternate DNS server IP addresses provided by your network administrator.

Step 4: Save Changes

After entering the DNS server IP addresses, click on the “Save” button to apply the changes. Your ESXi server will now use the specified DNS servers for domain name resolution.

Step 5: Verify DNS Configuration

To verify that the DNS configuration is working correctly, you can ping a domain name from the ESXi command line. If the DNS setup is successful, you should see responses from the specified DNS servers.

Step 6: Restart Management Network

After configuring DNS on your ESXi server, it is recommended to restart the management network to apply the changes. You can do this by navigating to the “Networking” tab and clicking on the “Actions” dropdown menu.

  • Click on “Restart Management Network” to restart the network services and apply the DNS changes.

That’s it! You have successfully configured DNS on your ESXi server. Your virtual machines should now be able to communicate with other devices on the network using domain names. If you encounter any issues, double-check the DNS server IP addresses and network configuration settings.
